U.S. Army Chaplain Winfield Scott paid $2.50 an acre for a 640 acre section of land in what is nowScottsdale. In December, 1888, Scott’s brother, George Washington Scott, became the first resident of the future town. By February, 1889, he had cleared the land, dug irrigation ditches, and planted 80 acres of barley, a 20-acre vineyard, and a seven-acre citrus orchard. Upon his retirement from the Army in 1893, Winfield Scott returned to area to join his brother. Future crops planted by Winfield Scott included citrus and other fruits, peanuts, and sweet potatoes.. In the Native American culture, south stands as a time of innocence, learning, and growth. In contrast, the west, with the approach of the sunset, reminds us of the wisdom of maturity. Where these two directions meet isScottsdale, anew citywith an old soul. This contemporary center is built on three, rich cultures: Native American, Spanish, and western pioneer. Each society left its imprint. Each presence can be tasted in the foods served, experienced in the architecture built, and appreciated in the art displayed in galleries and public spaces. This is the spirit ofScottsdale. And it is yours to experience, any time you choose.

Scottsdale Dining
Sure,Scottsdale is located in the heart of the West. But, we’ve come a long way since cowboy coffee and beef jerky were considered haute cuisine. The colorful cultures that give this region its singular flavor have left an indelible mark onScottsdale’s more than 600 restaurants. Here, the influences of Native American, Latin and Western-style cooking and ingredients have created a mouthwatering mélange of dishes accented by indigenous and international elements. Lately, even more exotic fare such as Asian-fusion has arrived on the scene, creating an endless menu of global dimensions. But don’t worry, if you’re craving a taste of the Old West, we can still whip up a mean charbroiled steak!
Scottsdale Nightlife
